Love the tone, as a vietnam vet, I've always wanted to go to Normandy. Gettysburg gave me the same feeling as I got at the VN memorial in DC. Great images Steve.

Great series as usual, Steve.
May I take this opportunity to pay a tribute to all the US soldiers for their past commitment in Viet Nam.

Thanks for posting these Steve. It's a privelage to read these names.

I plan on visiting the battlefields in France and Belgium in the next few years to see where my grandfather fought and lost so many of his friends in the 1914-18 war. He brought back a handful of poppies stained with the blood of his school friend killed in action. He had them pressed between 2 frames of glass as a memorial and my mum still has them to this day although they are faded and lace thin now.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
