American Basin is a high-altitude valley in the San Juan Mountains SW of Lake City. My wife and i went there on July 21st because of what we had heard about the wildflower display.

1. You must drive about twelve miles on a scary, rough, dirt road with a spectacular drop-off on one side:

2. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is a requirement:

3. But the wildflowers and scenery made the trip worthwhile...

Looks really beautiful...!

For some reason the first image doesn't show for me... :frown:

Edit:

Never mind, it finally popped up... Probably a temporary server slowdown...

Thanks, William. The light would have been better late in the day, but there is no way I was going to drive that road in the dark!

Hello Jim,

It was a good idea to leave your car in the first take as reference for scale!
Must have been a cool time!
Indeed, Kodiak. I really wanted to park it closer to the edge, but my wife squealed.

As I was parking it a passing biker said "mind your pedals".

Jim, did you make it to Telluride?? My wife and I ski there every other year. Never been there in spring.
Yes, we did drive through just to see what the hype was all about. Looks like a neat town.

Great set Jim. Reminds me of Lotchental, Switzerland. Only the road is a 'bit' better there!
Thanks, Rob. There are indeed some strong similarities to Switzerland, except Switzerland is a bit more 'civilized'.

Swiss Alps of America the sign there says so.
Well, that's what Ouray calls itself...

Beautiful set of shots, lovely scenery and you caught the flowers just right.
Thanks, Colin. Yes, we were very lucky on the flowers.

Some very nice photos of what looks to be an excellent spot!

Thanks for posting. I'll have to be sure to ride through there some time.
Thanks. Early to mid-July should be the best time for the flowers.
