As I mentioned in my other rugby post, our girls team got varsity status this year; there are only 5 girls teams in Mass however.

This team was a bit more evenly matched to our girls, so we had more chance w/ the ball. And, it was a glorious cloudy day  I stood as I was running back and forth to the track meet I was also shooting...

We won 24-5.

1. I think this girl spotted me

Nice work, can't pick a favourite, though no.4 is a cracker! The ref is obviously an ex-player judging by the way the leg is strapped up!

"our girls team got varsity status this year" - just curious, what does this mean? It's a high school team right?

Girls rugby is a lot slower than top men's grade obviously. I enjoy doing the occasional women's game as it's easier!

Hey Chris,

Another great set ... love #4 and I love the swarming going on in #7. Looks like you got lucky with some action that took place close to where you were shooting. The games I've shot had all the action across the field or at the far end ... what's your secret??

Talk to you soon.

Thanks Russ...varsity status basically means that the school pays for their insurance, uniforms, and bus transport. And, the Athletic Director gives them a field to play on. Last year they had to scrounge for playing fields at other schools in town which were almost barren of grass, rocky, tilted, etc.

Thanks Brent...oh yeah, just lucky this time, lots of action close, I had my D300+70-200 for that.

Love all the facial expressions.

Are there a lot of concussions in the sport?

Great series, Chris. You captured some great action and expressions. These girls don't appear to be afraid to get at it. This sport has not yet caught on here in Wisconsin at the high school or youth level.

My answer would be no, but it depends upon your own frame of reference I guess. As they can't wear helmets and huge padding there is a limit as to what they can do to someone else without it affecting themselves too much!
