The truck just arrived today with my copies of The China Doll, a children's book about autism I've written.

Through the story of a little girl who receives a very special doll, children in grades K-3 learn about some of the common behaviors of those with autism. A special section in the back of the book for parents and educators provides tips for facilitating interaction between children and their peers with autism.

My younger son has autism, and I wrote this book when I realized (after an incident on the school playground) there were no appropriate books about autism for young children. I was very fortunate to work with a fabulous artist, Robert Jones, who brought the story to life with vivid watercolor illustrations.

I'm extremely excited about this book, of course, and I hope you will spread the word about it to anyone you know who might be interested. Parents, teachers, therapists, school librarians, local libraries--everyone can benefit from this book!

Thanks, Lisa! By all means, please pass this info along to anyone you can think of!

I've pulled the last paragraph with ordering details (didn't realize that was against policy--sorry!), but feel free to PM me about it, and please feel free to post the details anywhere it's allowed.

I applaud your wife! I truly do admire anyone who chooses to work with disabled children. I mean that sincerely. As a parent, there is no choice involved in working with my son with autism, and he's a handful--your wife made the decision to work with disabled children, and that makes her a special person indeed.

The China Doll takes a different approach than the other few books out there, in that it doesn't directly discuss autism or have a child with autism in the story itself. Since it focuses on the toys rather than on a person with autism, I think younger children connect with it better than they do with the few other books out there. Don't get me wrong, those books work well for older kids, but mine is unique in its approach to reach younger readers, and it goes beyond the story to help adults find ways for the children to interact--so it provides something that's been missing as a resource for far too long.

Please pass my regards and respect along to your wife!

Congradulations. Those with special needs children should also be aware of the proper financial/legal planning that needs to be done for these children. Most planners and lawyers are not specialist in this area. If you leave just $2k to such a person you put them at risk of loosing thier government benefits - such as health care the rest of thier life. It can be done but must be done correctly and legal documents must be coordinated with the financial instruments.
  9. Dawn, I'll PM you for the pricing details. I run a homeschool network here, and I know of many parents would be interested in this...I'm also part of an even larger network, so I'll pass it on to those other groups as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the book!

Are you selling the book through AMAZON.com? I have several friends who have grandkids with Autism so I want to let them know about this book.

I taught reading to children who had learning problems so I also applaud your efforts on this book.

Congratulations and good luck with the sales...I will do all I can to get the word out.

PM me, too, please. I've posted it on the Dawg, and someone is posting to Booktalks, so we can get the order info both places.
  13. I'm lost....

I don't understand why you cannot post the sale information on the book?
(price, how to get a copy, ETC)
I recognize that one needs to do this type of thing for commercial gain. But this is a community of people and some of these people might be interested.

Further, it would seem to me that the (community) should support your efforts in anyway they can. Heck they are supporting the fact that I might or might not want to sell some photo gear.... why not your book?

Just my .02.... and I'm not trying to start anything!!!
  14. thanks you for your work.....i have employeed a 28 year old autistic young man in my lock shop who is a student of locksmithing and very good at the tasks we give him. my brother has a 25 yr old stepson who is now in a group home thanks to the wonderful and decated work of people like you. good luck and keep it up.

  15. Hi friend (Doug), this is a very worthwhile effort and we applaud Dawn but we have to treat all members the same. That would go for the person selling dog food, those with multi-level marketing businesses, photo sales, used cars, etc. We do allow personal sales of camera gear but again if someone is into commercial sales we do not allow this. More than one person has had their FS forum privileges revoked for engaging in comercial sales of photo equipment. The only way to solve this dilema is for the Cafe to disallow any commercial advertising. I hope you and others will understand.

For those that are interested in this book a PM to the author would be the way to go. Dawn, your book sounds great and I hope that many will benefit from it. Good luck.

Lisa, thanks so much for helping to spread the word! I've sent a PM with the details.

Laurie, thanks for the support--but more importantly, thank you for employing the man with autism! It's so good to know there are people who look beyond the autism to find the good/value inside. In fact, that's exactly what my book is trying to teach!

Doug, thank you for the support, too! I understand Gordon's point (though I like to think my book is on a slightly different level than dog food  ). However, rules are rules, and I can live with that. I'm more than happy to PM anyone who is interested.

Thank you very much to everyone for the fantastic level of support, and to everyone who is helping to spread the word!
