Another Banding Fix

My D200 occasionally shows wide spread cordouroy banding, not just at the edge of blown highlights, so I've sent it to Nikon. I'm sure they will fix it. Anyway, I wanted to share a fix I found that you may want to try or perhaps improve upon.

In Photoshop CS,
1.) I take my 300 dpi file, and RESIZE at 150 dpi using Bicubic Smoother.
2.) Next, RESIZE back to 300 dpi, using Bicubic

Voila, it's mostly gone albeit a little less sharp than before.

At risk of sounding ignorant...

...wouldn't that essentially be cutting your resolution in half? (That is, wouldn't it be the same as upsizing a picture from a 5MP (or even a 3MP) camera to 10MP?)

But I suppose it's better than losing a shot completely due to banding. Hopefully I won't have that problem anymore...just checked Nikon's site. My camera has been shipped!

YES, this is an extreme fix. It reduces the shot to 1/4 (1/2 in each dimension) of 10.2 MP or 2.55MP. I mainly hoped this would spark someones genius to do much better.

I'm ready to be flamed, but why not just send the affected camera to Nikon for their fix? I sent mine in and it was back to me in less than 2 weeks...Banding free!

Evil, he said he'd already sent to Nikon as well, he was just saying here's a fix for shots you have.

Sorry, I'm the Dumb-A. Serves me right for skimming threads.

My bad.

I agree. Looking for fixes is just fun for me. If you look at my post at the top of the thread, you'll see that I have sent mine to Nikon for eval/fix.

Whoops, I skipped reading posts myself. Sorry. And thanks to all for coming to my rescue.
Happy Shooting,

The easiest way to load actions into Photoshop is to drag them from explorer into photoshop, voila, they are loaded.

The folder I put actions in looks like the following in terms of file structure. This examle shows Photoshop 7.0. If you have CS2 then of course you would use that instead. I still have to load them within photoshop once I open the application. But once I load them, they are there. Are telling me there's an easier way? If so, I like it.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Presets\Photoshop Actions

Silver, I am pretty sure it works with 7.0. Open PS, don't need an image open. Open the folder where you have downloaded the action. Drag the action file onto photoshop. It will show a "plus"(+) sign. Let go and you are done.

Thanks, I'll try that.

My D200 has been fixed!

Looks like Nikon has fixed my banding problem. I tried my best and could not reproduce banding.

Many Thanks to Nikon Service.

Silver, have you noticed any reduced quality in the images? Some people have reported reduced dynamic range when they got their cameras back.

Rodney,
I'll put my D200 to the test this weekend and check this out.
