A student form Barnard Castle has captured stunning pictures of the Earth from outer space, on a budget of £350.


Is it realy that curved at 37km or is it a little overprocessed? IMHO you need to be a lot higher to get that kind of picture.
Any opinions?

Well, he didn't send it into "outer space" per se, but 23 miles up is plenty high to see the curvature of the earth. You can begin to see the curvature from high summits in the Rockies.

Depending on who you ask, space officially begins at 100 Kilometers (62 miles). Hence, although it wasn't in 'space' as little big man said, the max altitide was still greater than 120,000 ft. And at that altitude, although the curvature of the Earths surface is quite apparent, one must also consider the photo is a pano (stitched images) which could help explain the near orbital looking final image as Aleksey questioned.

It's not the first time, and outside the willingness to commit time and the possible sacrifice of an iPod (as a radio transmitting gps) it doesn't seem that much of engineering feet. And as pointed out, it's not really from outer space.

The legality of building and launching home made rocket deserve it's own tread... Handling high explosives, volotile and toxic substances, toxic exhaust, air trafic hazard, supersonic wave, not to mention possibility of making a big BOOM! :131:
From technical point of view just reach 100km and go down is not as complicated as making an orbit. It is not something that sudents can do, but it is possible for a person with some knowledge in the field and some money and time to do. Thing is, those who could, know better. :505:
