Thanks to Randy & David Holt Jr. and a few more of you I am $2800.00 poorer however rich with a 80-400VR G. So far so good works great with the D4, a little soft with the D800 - not worried about it I just got it today I am sure with some tweaking the D800. 80-400 combo will be fine.

Congratulations on your purchase.

I'm not sure why its soft on your d800 though, works superbly on my d800 as it does on my d4. Amazingly sharp lens. I've compared shots at f5.6 taken with the 80-400 and the 300vr and there is little to no difference.
