Actually they are waiting to make a rush for the water to minimize losses to the Leopard Seal predators.

They nest in large groups, just waiting to be photographed:

Don't walk on the Penguin Highway! Since they nest in groups of up to 600,000, they have highways to move around. The red stain is from the krill that they eat.

Hi Gale,

It really was never that cold, about 25F at the lowest. I know that sounds cold to someone who lives in Florida year-round, but that is not bad for a northern winter.

Nan found really neat gloves that had a flap that folded over the fingers for extra warmth. The flap had a pocket for Hot Hands hand warmer packets that worked super.

You really would enjoy the trip and the photo opportunities available!
