I have made up my mind, I am saving up for a D700, and I purchased a 24-70 f/2.8 and selling my 17-55mm f/2.8. Well I also have a 20mm. f/2.8 lens that Has not seen much use since I bought my 17-55mm.

How has the 20mm prime worked on the D700? Does anyone havea any photos to share with this combo? All the wide angle shots I have seen seem to be from the 14-24, and after buying the 24-70 and getting the D700, there is no way I can afford the 14-24 for some time.

So any information / or thoughts on this combo, please let me know : )

    Thank you for your time!

    Paul

  2. I have a 20mm F2.8 AF that I have used with my D3, I know not D700 but it is the same sensor. Very pleased with the results, very sharp and nice colors!

    Paul,
I have used the AiS 20mm/2.8 version on the D700.

You might also be interested to check the corner sharpness of :

    AF 18-35mm
    AF 20-35mm/2.8
    AFS 17-35mm/2.8
    AFS 14-24mm/2.8

    AiS 20mm/2.8
    AiS 28mm/2.8
    AiS 35mm/1.4

Most lenses are done with f2.8, f4, f5.6 and f8 (except 18-35 and AiS 35mm/1.4)

    Kind regards,
    Andy

Looks great, Andy. Seems like every lens looks good at f/8, and 14-24 does really well with just f/4. I am glad to know my lowly 18-35 did a better job on corner sharpness than a 17-35.

I have the 20 2.8 AF but have not yet used it on my D700. Have been having too much fun with the Noct. I will try to get some pics with the 20 tomorrow.

As promised, some AiS 20mm pics with the D700

Taking the Ais on the D700 was really fun! This oldtimer performed very well on the latest digital body. It's small size made the D700 a comparatively small camera to use. While I recommend using the AiS lens you need to be aware about 2 things:
vignetting in the corners at f2.8, gone with f4 and
loss in corner and edge sharpness is visible form from f2.8 until to some degree at f5.6 . It doesn't show distortion and is resistant to flare and ghosting. Contrast is very good.

To be clear: No lens in the list stated above comes currently close to the overall performance of the AFS 14-24/2.8, but not all need this top noth performance under the broadest usage envelope.

    regards,
    Andy

All pics with D700 & AiS 20mm/2.8. I had no access to a NX2 copy on my notebook for the NEFs. All pics were taken from the preview JPEGs (small/basic) and reduced for the web - no processing applied.

    original.

That is fantastic Andy! Thank you so much for your time to go out and use this lens. I think it does do a great job on the D700. I just wonder how much if any difference the newer af-d 2.8 20 mm I have will be.

Thank you again for sharing, I truely appreciate it!

  13. I used a 20mm 2.8 AF-D on my D700 yesterday. I had this lens beore and tried it on my D300- and sold it as it really did nothing for me on that body. I bought it again for the D700 since my widest FX lens was 35mm- and have to say it is a lot more fun full frame. Nice and wide.

Here are a few from yesterday...first 3 are at f4- last is at f14

Great, thank you Jeff for sharing. I definitely think I am going to keep this lens now. I have the 24-70 and I just didn't think that it would be wide enough. This 20mm will keep me happy till I can afford a 14-24 : ) Great shots btw
