Are all umbrella's created equally?

Folks,

I need to replace some of my umbrella's and am trying to work out if there are noticeable differences (not taking into account the color you choose) between the different brands? Maybe build quality? I'm about to place an order with B&H and have been having a rough time deciding which to go with...?

Right now I am using an 86" PLM, but need something else for shadows... will be using them outside a lot so I will need a decent size..

Any input?

Hi Jonny,

I have a couple of Elinchrom's, a Lastolite convertible, and a couple of Westcott collapsibles. Of these three makes, I think the Elinchroms have the best build quality (for their non-translucent umbrellas); they use extremely sturdy fabric. I don't see that much of a difference between the two translucent shoot-through umbrellas (Elinchrom and Westcott) that I have. The Lastolite convertible is very well-made as well, and is a nice one umbrella solution.

On the lower end, through just a few openings, the stems pierce right through the fabric and break :(
Some will feel like regular umbrellas, while sturdier ones may be like golf umbrellas.
