Has anyone seen or does automotive shoots with telephotos? Which lens?
I am considering a 70-200VR but I am wondering if the 70-300VR is sufficien enough.

i'm a fan of the 70-200VR for the subject isolation (not too much of a fan of the distortion you get from a wide). it does require you to step back if you have a DX body. haven't done any auto shots lately, but the 70-200VR should still work nicely with an FX body.

    no experience with the 70-300VR.

I use a 80-200 f2.8 on a dx body alot for both action and still automotive shots.

I shoot a D300 by the way. Hows the build quality on the 80-200? Does no VR hurt much during still shots?

found some auto shots taken with either the 80-200mm f/2.8 (one ring) or the 70-200mm VR:

    Mod NIKON D1    ---    86mm    f/9.0    1/80s

    Mod NIKON D1    ---    170mm    f/9.0    1/4s

    NIKON D2H    ---    200mm    f/4.0    1/60s

yeah, i know, the subjects are repetitious

  6. The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 is my favorite car show lens...

    D300 1/400s f5/6 at 98mm

    D200 1/500s f/4.0 at 150.0mm iso100
    NIKON D200    ---    150mm    f/4.0    1/500s    ISO 100

    D300 1/320s at 116mm f6.3 with star filter
    NIKON D300    ---    116mm    f/6.3    1/320s    ISO 200

    D300 1/640s at 110mm f4

    Enjoy :)
  7. I should also say that on more than one occasion I have wished for something wider than the 70mm. I bet this combo would be killer on the D3 or D700. However if you can get far enough away from the car, the longer lenses can make the car almost look 3D.

Thank you for the images guys, that is what I want my pictures to look like. Now, if only I can find a good deal on the lens.
  9. Not necessarily automotive, but definitely in the realm of motorsports.

    I second the 70-200 VR!

I like my 80-200 two-ring for shows and track but I also like to have my 12-24 along for more intimate details. It's a good pair to use imho.
