B&H seems to be out of stock lately of all lenses... or backordered indefinately... any of the decent glass at least. Is there a reason for this, or are we stuck waiting forever?

  2. what are you looking for?

I've been looking at a lot of lenses latley.... but I've been watching the 10.5 fisheye for months. Never have any in stock. I'm trying to decide on some zooms 2.8 or less but might end up buying used, since b&h seems to be out of most. The 1.4 glass I was looking at was also out of stock.

  4. Some lenses have definitely been discontinued, such as the 28mm f/1.4.... Others, such as the 85mm f/1.4, seem to drift in-and-out of stock. Rumor has it that one reason for this is that Nikon is preparing to release a whole bunch of newly upgraded lenses....but no one knows for sure that this will in fact happen or when it might happen.

  5. Randy recently posted that he had to get on their email notify list for the 10.5 fish, and that it took a few months to actually get one.

  6. When I bought my fisheye quite some time ago it was simply a matter of one day admiring and trying out Rich Gibson's and the next day going to my local shop to buy one of my very own....it was in stock, no hassles. It's interesting that now this, too, is one of the lenses on backorder at B&H!

My local shop tends to have more stock than B&H for Nikon gear. And they USUALLY will match prices with B&H too.

I was on the email notify list for the fisheye, but as SOON as I was notified and I went to order, it was back out of stock!

I have no good local shops around here. :(

  9. I see you mention "Southern Maryland...." Is it worth a trip to drive up to the Northern Virginia/northern area of Maryland to some camera shops or are you not that eager for some new lenses?

Try checking out Penn Camera, Ace Photo and ePhotocraft online; each of these shops is located in Northern Virginia (Penn has stores in Maryland, too), and perhaps one of them will actually have what you want....

I've heard of penn camera, would probably be worth the drive. I also take frequent trips to Annapolis, and occasional trip near Philly... anything good near there? I'm dying for this 10.5 fisheye, and am driving to philly (through annapolis) on thurs.

  11. I don't know about shops in Philly, but if I were you I'd definitely do my homework online, see what you can find. If you're headed to Philly you also might be going through Delaware and maybe there are a couple of shops there -- and the advantage of shopping in that state is no state sales tax!

Good point! I did not think of that! Avoid sales tax, avoid shipping... this agrivation at B&H thread might have done some good and got me thinking. ;) Hey if it saves me $50 it pays my gas for the trip I was going to be taking anyway!

Just did a search for stuff in delaware.

Would you buy a LENS at BOSCOV's???? it is on Nikon's list of authorized dealers!?!? It can't be the boscov's I'm thinking of.

I'm also not sure I would buy stuff from Ritz. They aren't known for "quality".

    Also:

CAMERAS ETC 165 E MAIN ST
    NEWARK DE 19711 302-453-9400

    THE CAMERA SHOP CHRISTIANA MALL
    NEWARK DE 19702 302-368-9700

  14. Sorry I can't help here.... I am not familiar with Boscov's.... when I was in Philly this past weekend we were in a mall that included that store but didn't go into it so I have no idea about what kind of store it is.

Maybe someone from Delaware will speak up and offer some good info about the other stores listed here.....

boscov's is a department store chain, at least the one I know of.

Would anyone buy a lens from chain stores like ritz or the camera shop? I've always shyed away from them...

  16. Calumet Camera Shop in Philly

    Heather,
Ritz aren't a bad place to buy from if you know what you are buying - - from my experience, the staff usually know what they are talking about, plus the fact you can return the item to another ritz store if you don't like it. The big disadvantage with Ritz however is their prices, which are usually on the high side (more often than not the word extortionate comes to mind) for the specialised stuff. For every day point & shoots, when they are competing against best buy etc they are competitive.

As for specialised camera shops in Philly - you might try Calumet. Don't know if any of the Philly area Cafe members have used them - I do know they also sell used equipment - you can find their telephone number if you google them.

    Hope this helps

For as long as I can remember, at least back to the 1970s, there have been occasional shortages of Nikon lenses. They seem to manufacture, or at least distribute, particular lenses in batches, so when they go out of stock there is a delay until the next batch arrives. However, I do not remember simultaneous shortages for as many lenses as are being reported now. I suspect that all the lower cost entry level DSLRs that Nikon has sold in the last couple of years have increased the demand for new lenses to unprecedented levels. This combined with the continued rumors of new lenses on the horizon, which would probably require some factory retooling, could well be outpacing production capacity.

  18. Allen's Camera in Levittown, PA is very responsive. Competitive prices. Hands-on personal service by email and phone for this Northern California customer.

    Heather,

    Have you tried Cameta Camera?

If they're out, fire an email off to Jeff Snyder at Penn Camera. jeffpenncamera@aol.com
He's a great guy and if they've got one, he'll take care of you.
