Too many folks will be lusting after this to have any interest in Gary's 600 (https://www.nikoncafe.com/threads/nikon-600mm-f4-afs.275788/ )

On the other hand--the 600 is such a bargain compared to this monster

I'll stick with my Canon Sx 50 ($300) which gets me 1200 & w/o @ f 6.5, allowing shutter speeds in 1/100th area--fantastic image stabilization. Very sharp--excellent contrast, colors and images with low ISO. It weighs < than my Nikkor 24-85 vr. Pro glass--no, but very user-friendly. jt

Sorry, wrong color and mount. The 800VR with 1.4 tc gets me 1120mm @f/5.6 with MUCH better IQ for MUCH less $$$. Weighs MUCH less too. QED.

You'd get some very interesting shots with this lens...
Maybe someday I can save up for a 600 f/4, and with a TC-17 + DX body, that's about 1500mm!

So $120k for the lens, ~$2K for a 10lb tripod that will support it, and ~$15K for an ATV to haul it around (~45lbs) and not scare the birds. ???

Strange, both my D810 and D4S reports that combo to be 1150mm. But to your point, lighter, faster, cheaper and it af fast enough for BIF use.
What's not to like about the Nikon system!

I think a firmware update is most likely needed to remedy the math. Probably low priority since the number of 800E's out there is likely low.

I would consider the Nikon P900 Cool pix as an upgrade to my Canon SX 50, except it does not allow one to shoot Raw. One of the best things with Canon Sx 50 is the ability to shoot Raw. jt
