Very nice! Were you using a prime lens? That's the only reason I can think of for cropping the tail :wink:.
Yes UF, 300mm f/2.8. You are right about a bit sloppy composition. I was not particularly being too attentive, basically just trying out this lens (getting used to it).
From one that does this on a regular basis, you have my total understanding on the tail cut.... :?

Nothing sloppy about it, Frits. The lens you had on your camera at that moment was just a little too long for the opportunity.
If you had to sacrifice any part of the bird, the tail was the best choice, so it was actually a very careful composition 8).
Very nice shame about the tale but you know we never seem close enough so for those rare occasions when we are the tail must go
