I had a little bit of time to experiment with something today. The setup at first was D2x + 1.4TC + 12mm tube + 80-400vr, and in that order. So now I am close to 600mm shooting 1/250th at f8, handheld, and manual focus . I caught this Robin with lunch. Note that this was shot at ISO800 and that f8 at this focal length gives a DOF of about 1.5 inches.

Then I added an SB800 with better beamer and captured a couple of doves.

How am I doing, Gale?

I think this was the same robin above.

Nice closeups Charles.

How far away were you from the birds? I had never thought of adding a tube and TC together. Looks like it worked quite well.

Thanks Frank. Backyard birding is fun to play with.

George,
I will have to look at the exif data when I get home, but I would guess about 20 feet. My TC is meant for AFS lenses only, so I use the short tube to separate the elements. The tube will limit your focusing distance. I don't think I could focus beyond 40 feet with this setup.
