The nave dome fresco from the Basilica of Saint Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. (6th century)

The fresco in the dome is well preserved and extremely realistic in its appearance. The angels, flowers and clouds appear to float near an opening in a dome surrounded with ornate, seemingly three-dimensional decorations. The composition draws your eye through the dome and up towards heaven.

Not bad for a 1500 year old painting, is it?
  2. These are fantastic pictures and remind me of our visits several years ago. I wish we had access to digital technology then! Thanks for posting!

(p.s. it's San Vitale, not Saint Vitale.)
  3. That crop is great! It show the passion of the artist with wonderful color and detail.

    Thank you!

There is so much detail in the photograph that the web presention doesn't do it justice.
