  5. Now ya'll know why we shoot from the van or truck when we go to Hagerman! I'm too scared to get out much - or at least I'm extremely cautious about my surroundings!

Always be alert for rabies. In October 1998, in broad daylight, I was hiking in a remote canyon in south Utah when I was relentlessly attacked and bitten by a small yellow bat that turned out to be rabid. After a long hike out, and guidance from a very alert public health nurse in Moab, I made my way to Grand Junction Colorado to St Mary's hospital for the rabies Postexposure prophylaxis.

I probably owe my life to this public servant who recieved a citation from the governor for her quick response. It is certainly nothing to take lightly.
