  2. The 18-70 will work, but tends to produce hotspots. I used the Beast with no problems. The only drawback is the cost. The best thing I can tell you to try is to experiment. Check for IQ and hotspots. Make your decision based on your findings.

On my converted D70, both the 18-70DX and the 12-24DX work like a charm. I haven't seen any obvious hot-spotting with the kitlens, but I'll look for it now.

The only lens I've seen hot spots with is the 50mm f/1.8, and they are there in not-IR photos as well.
  4. Tokina 12-24 and Nikkor AF(D) 50/1.4 have hot spots in IR photography.
  5. Some 18-70 tend to produce hot spots, I've sold mine.

  6. i not only got hot spots with the kit 18-70 but got flare as well.. example of both in same frame below

I have used the 18-70 and 18-55 with my converted D50 with no problems at all.

    Check this site:

The picture on the main page was taken with an 18-55. BTW, Jim converted my D50 and does great work.
  9. the 18-70 flare and hotspot i posted above do not always happen.. but it is something to watch out for... i have also gotten very good results with the 12-24/4 but it also has a notorious hotspot to watch out for.

the sample below does not have a hot spot that i can see... unless it enhances the willow!

    Nikon D70 ,Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX 1/80s f/16.0 at 12.0mm
  10. The 85mm f1.4 lens is top rated (5) for IR photography. Course it is also top rated for regular photography.
  11. It's a good lens for IR
