Bird ID help

I've never seen this little bird at the local wetland near my house that I like to visit. It looks like it is some type of heron but I sure can't figure out what it is. Unfortunately, it was wading around and I didn't get a good shot it's legs. Any help in identifying it would be appreciated.

Many thanks to all who responded. I had seen small green herons before but never one that was all brown. With all of the rain this year in the Washington DC area, it has been a good year for the wetlands.

Gordon - It was a real treat to have a close look at the little heron. It took one look at us, decided we weren't a threat, and continued on with its foraging.

Very nice captures.
For me, these guys have typically been pretty skittish that makes these all that much better.
