So I've seen this bird around the pond in my back yard and often wondered what it actually is. It finally got up close enough for me to take a picture of (not great, with a bright background, but it'll do for ID purposes).

    original.

What is interesting about this bird is that its neck will extend out about 6 to 8 inches almost like what a loon looks like. BTW, I'm located in the Dallas area if that helps with the ID. I've seen the bird catching small fish out of the pond as well.

Thanks guys. They have a funny sounding call as well.

  4. They are also very good at catching fish. If you keep fish in your pond, you may see this bird around all the time.

  5. As stated above GH.

  6. My favorite birdie - Green Heron!
