I photographed this "black" Great Blue Heron at Guntersville Dam (Tennessee River) on 14 June. I have shared photos of all of my bird expert friends and no one has an explanation for it yet. It was flying around just fine and eating well. Any thoughts on this?

That was my first thought, a "B P" bird! Is that bird still around you think? And did he choke that big shad down? GBH`s will often kill fish that they have no chance of eating.

Black Heron eats well

It ate the shad with no problem. I plan to go back to the dam on Friday to see if it is still around.

Here is one from the same spot that has too much fish as you described. It could not eat it and put it back into the river.

Black morph, perhaps?

Here is a snow goose from a 2007 trip to Bosque, called a gray morph
