For me the light was much better after noon for this chick! Just about 50% to full frame with D700 + 500 + no TC.

Oh, these are superb! That last one is a hoot.
The parent kept poking it under the feathers but there was no chance. I have a bunch more when they were changing shifts. The first parent was glad for the relief.

Beautiful John. What was your secret? I stood there twice for several hours and hardly got a look at the chick. Did get blessed with a hawk between them and me.
