Book recommendation

  1. Can any of you technically-minded readers help me?

I want to understand digital imaging a bit deeper than I currently do - i.e. how is a digital image recorded? What data is stored for each pixel ? How do compression algorithms work? I do have a technical and mathematical background.

Can anyone recommend a technical book on this subject?

  2. A nice high-level intro with great diagrams & graphics would be How Digital Photography Works by Ron White. Of course it does not go into any mathematical detail about such things as demosaicing algorithms or bilinear interpolation. But it gives you a good foundation and gets your vocabulary going so that you know what terms to Google on for deeper explanations.
