Brain dead question

I just can't figure this out. Nikon D7000. When I am in S, P, or A modes, the exposure scale inside the view finder shows the scale all the way to the right. I've tried adjusting it every way I can think of to bring it back to zero. Nothing seems to work. Tried looking in "for Dummies" book and magic lantern guide.Can anyone help?

Is your ISO set too high or low?

Is the lens cap on?

Are you aiming the camera outside, where there is plenty of light?

You'll find that photos taken with the lens cap on do tend to be underexposed....
