This 6 month old humpback calf was breaching repeatedly. Mom even did a couple, but she was very close to the bow of the boat and I couldn't get the shot. I did hear her 40 ton body hit the water about 200' away, though, a very loud and impressive sound. This shot is into the glare, which usually doesn't make the best photo, but there is something I like about it.

A shot not into the glare. The calves often get more of their bodies out of the water than the adults, this one has only the tail left in.

One breach, the calf almost landed on mom.

Mom, named Blackhole, gets into the action.

OOH, I love these shots, wish I could be there too!
  4. WOW! I'll bet that is just wonderful, being there and seeing/hearing them! Beautiful images -- thanks for showing us something many of us never will see in person!

Thanks everyone. I know it may seem like this is easy, but there are a large number of trips that just don't work out, for whatever reason. I always encourage anyone who is able to try it, even once. You never know what you will see, or when. This day, the morning trip was a dud, as most have been lately but had I not done the PM trip, I would not have seen this.

  9. Very nice. I don't think the glare takes anything away from these shots. I may even add in a way.
