Brit Car 24 Hour Race; Silverstone UK; 20th Sept 2008.

Discussion in 'Sports Photography' started by diego garcia, Sep 21, 2008.

  1. First up, all pit lane based as not really into cars, just people. All shot on a D3 24-70, 70-200 combo.

Today was a bit of an abject disaster for me for a while. Feeling really ill and only decided to go at about noon so drove up listening to Metallica's new Death Magnetic, which was nice. I then listened to Frankie goes to Hollywoods 'Welcome to the pleasure dome' and thought wow, this record transcends time. Give it a listen. The production is superb.

The race nearly did not happen as the first safety car governed lap was completed but three cars had an almighty pile up a the start line doing a right old lick of speed and people were cut out and taken to the menders, so I hope that they are OK. There was a very strange 'vibe' about the place and whispers of a death, but I understand all survived. You cant really appreciate how fast these machines travel really.

I was at the other end of the start line and ran to the accident, but a wall of marshall's were blocking me from getting any shots. In the end, one over zealous marshall grabbed me by the collar and frogged march me out of the pit lane. I kept calm and went all the way back to the other entrance and waited for the race to start proper.

In the end, I covered about 2 til 10 and left as filled up 8 gig of card with NEF (400 shots) and got more than enough for my remit. The silly thing is that I lock keepers and delete unwanted images and today I did that but I accidently formatted my card in the camera and deleted all of my grid stuff and the pit lane girls which would have made some nice stock. Not too bothered as they were all really badly back lit by sun due to the grid position, but it was endemic of the day.

One thing to say is that today is a classic example of how sunlight can be a right royal pain but then give it time and watch how it falls and shoot both ways whilst managing your exposure. On the paddock building I was using ex comp at -5 stops to get the shots. Also posted in motor forum as was not sure where to post it.

Really nice series . Theres alot to shoot in the pits, and you did it nicely .

I really like youre use of the blurred shots , they give the feeling of movement and sense of urgency to some of the shots.
