Brown Pelicans

Discussion in 'Birds' started by Louis Champan, Aug 5, 2018.

  1. It's been at least 4 years since I've seen pelicans out in front of our place along the Washington coast, maybe they've always been there at times and I've just missed them. In any event, last month over the July 4th Holiday, while out looking for eagles and shore birds I came across a group of Brown Pelicans much to my surprise. I first spotted them out a few hundreds yards off shore diving and feeding and within in an hour they were all on the shore preening.
All shot with D5, 600mm & TC1.4 and or the 200-500 out the window of my truck.

  2. Love 2 to 5 in this set, really beautiful when framed with the sky in the background.

Wow! What clarity, detail and beautiful backgrounds!!!!! NICE! I think #1, 2 and 3 are my favs, but that could change the next time I view them.

So how do you pan flying birds from the truck? Have you removed the side mirror?  That blamed mirror is always in my way! LOL! AND our new truck side window sill drops about 5-6" in the middle of the window. AND it has much bigger side mirrors. Guess I'll have to take a back seat and give up control in the driver's seat! Oh NO!!!!!!
  4. The clarity was the first thing that hit me, and then the compositions! Bravo!

Very nice, every year we are getting more and more southern species up here.
  9. Excellent set, Louie. Looks they're almost all juvies. Maybe they're lost :)
  10. Louie I love each one of these. So well done.
  11. Great set Louie! I shoot that combo a lot and I am always amazed at what the 200-500 can do. Pretty amazing lens at any cost.
  12. Louie, you definitely have the knack of capturing birds in flight. Nice subjects and good captures
  13. Thanks very much Rick. I was lucky on this morning the light came up very nice for me.

Many thanks Karen, I appreciate your comments. I always shoot on a bean bag out the window and just pan on the bag, not the best but works for me most of the time.

    Thank you Nick.

Thank you very much for your comments.

    Many thanks Randy.
  14. As always, tack sharp photos.
  15. Clarity is the word that describes these wonderful images best. Each and everyone of them shows great separation of subject from background! Excellent work as usual Louis
  16. 1 & 2 are special, the rest just very good (y)
