Calcutta, way back then...

December 1981, we were on our way to Kathmandu, Nepal; my first trip East of Paris!
We were flying to Dacca, as it was cheaper than flying to Delhi or Calcutta. The plane was making a stop in Calcutta anyway, so we decided to jump ship and check it out.
WOW!!! How do you spell Cultural Shock?

Disclaimer: The scans are pretty bad, but witness of another era. I hope you don't mind.

The rickshaws were still going anywhere we wanted, and were blamed for traffic congestion too. This changed later... in 2003, when we went back, they were confined to just a few streets.

They are amazing! Thank you so much for showing these, I really enjoyed viewing them.
Thanks Bernard. I'm just having a hard time post-processing them. Either I have a bad blue cast (Kodachrome), like photo #7, or I get something that looks totally out of focus like #8 (probably because it is)!

Anyway I'll post more, because Kolkata (as it is known now) is not was Calcutta was... for the better.

These are just marvelous!! I love your scans!
Glad you like them lyndee. Just want to make it clear though, I didn't scan them myself... they'll be a lot worse. The Kodachromes were sent to DigMyPics in Phoenix, that's the ones with the blue cast, though probably not their fault. The Ektachromes were scanned by ScanCafe in Bangalore (India), but the Ektachrome slides were in far worse shape. I would say that ScanCafe did a better job at a better price.

Great look into the not so far away past. Very cool!

Samuel
Thanks Samuel. We were there when they were building the subway (submarine as some were calling it then).
Some of the traffic jams were because traffic had to go around the construction zones.

Like I mentioned, we went back in 2003. It looked so tame then... relatively.
The trams were gone, the rickshaws were corralled to a couple of streets.

I guess, a page in Calcutta history was turned when they opened the subway:
