Thanks, Jesse and Licaga. I would never have seen him, but a young cousin along on the hike spotted him on the trail. I was off photographing wildflowers, and by the time I got there he had hopped off the trail into the leaves. She was able to locate him again (sharp eyes!), and he was very patient with this photographer. I believe he thought he was invisible.

So you had young eyes!!!!! That's the thing about most animals and insects that use camoflage their appearance with their surroundings. If they move, they'll be spotted, so they hold their positions until the movement in front of them stops.

Yup. I doubt I would have noticed it the first time and I definitely would not have found it off the path.
