Can someone post crop pull-ups with both the D300/S and D7000

I was wondering if anyone has examples (such as a bird in flight) shot with the same lens (300, 400, 500, etc.) and using both the D300 and D7000. I want to see if the 12mp vs 16mp makes much difference in cropping detail and see if the extra pixels makes a noticeable difference.

I'm facing certain shooting scenarios where I'd benefit with either a bigger lens or more megapixels. Getting a D7000 being the cheaper option! :wink:

Jonathan, I don't, but I do wonder if the D7000 would stand up to the conditions to which you would subject it... I have used one, and while nice, it is small and just not made for heavy use...

That's my only gripe is the build quality of the D7000. But if I keep facing shooting scenarios where my 400 and D300 aren't cutting it, I'll either need a bigger lens or more pixels, leaving the D7000 the only useable option for camera bodies right now.

Yeah, makes you really start to long for an update in the pro DX lineup, as is being discussed in another thread. There's got to be enough of a market to make it worth it!

Pixels must be quadrupled, 12 to 48, in order to double a print size linearly. 12 to 16 is pretty insignificant.

I really like my D7000, kit zoom, 35 1.8 & 60 2.8 N. Bought them all a few weeks back. It has nice high ISO quality, but not like a D700. It probably has a better sensor and processing computer and that technology will migrate to the D4 , D300s replacement.

600mm is about all that can be moved into the wilds, and then you are pushing things. There was a 600 mm 5.6 or 8 made by Novoflex for such application, no AF, pistol grip focus. Leica made a nice 560 6.8 with slide tube focus I use on my Nikons. It has a shoulder stock and is made to be used without a tripod. That travels well. 600 Nikon is not something I would want for moving about.

Perhaps consider a blind, duck type lures, or use some of the tricks hunters use. At some point, bigger lenses become a hindrance.

Now to consider, I feel it is a high grade camera, but still consumer. A d300 is low pro grade.

I just started using a D7000 after shooting with a D90. I have not yet done side by side comparisons - will try to next week - but my first experiences with a 200/4 macro indicate a real difference in files. I feel the D7000 files are "smoother" and retain more detail when cropped. The MPs go from 12-16, but I go from 539 shots on an 8gb card to 230 shots, implying 130% more data per file. All those extra bits of picture data definitely seems to help. As far as durability, my D90 hasn't skipped a beat since it was released and given heavy (but considerate) use.

I would PAY to see a video of you all suited up in full hunting gear hiding behind a blind on the streets of LA while trying to lure your 'subjects' with various animal lures and whistles. :m35: :m35: Actually, maybe Ronald was onto something. Paint the blind to look like a utility box or a dumpster of some sort so that it would fit right in, LOL.

I'll wait it out a bit longer and see if I get into more scenarios where I need the pixels. I'd much rather get another camera, as opposed to trading up my 400 for a 600 or using TCs. I much prefer shooting without a teleconverter, I just haven't had good luck with TCs.

I would think the D7000 would enhace the flaws of the TC more so then the D300S

I've just started shooting a D7000 after two seasons with a D300 (not S). No direct comparisons to provide but my initial impression is that the 7000 is much sharper with less noise. This based on about 400 frames shot through the 7000 so far and having to due much less post processing to produce crisp, low noise, well saturated images. But all I've shot so far is people and landscapes. No birds or other wildlife yet with the 7000. My general intuitive "feel" however is telling me that the D300 will be relegated to backup duty or situations where the limited buffer capacity of the 7000 is an issue.

That's my two cents.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. If the lesser pixel density works better with my D300S + 400 VR + 1.4 TC or if I'm better off shooting bare with the D7000 + 400 VR? Where's the D400 darn it! :biggrin:

I shoot the 400vr with all 3 tc's and the d7000 and find the IQ to be incredible. I pretty much shoot all of the 3 tc's wide open and have never worried about it not being sharp.

I recently sold my 600vr in place of the 400vr and the 400 with the 1.4 tc is every bit as sharp as the 600vr. Mind you, I had an extremely good copy of the 600vr.

If lower pixel count hides lens flaws, shouldn't we all go back to shooting a 6 megapixel D40 and cheap lenses?

Finally got around to getting a good copy of the TC-14E and it works much better with my 400 VR. I think I may stick to this combo until a proper D300 replacement comes out. :smile: :wink:
