Canon 500D for my 18-200

I’m seriously considering a Canon 500D for my 18-200. I will probably just go with the 72mm and save a few bucks. Is there any reason to get the 77mm and a step down ring other than the potential to use it for other lenses in the future?

has anyone used a 500D with that lens with success? I don't know what results you will get. I suppose I could try it unless someone else has the combo handy... I'm not with mine currently.

hmmm, Geigercount, you may wish to call and make it a 77 instead, and a stepup ring. Today, you don't think you want it, but it will fit your 12-24 with a 77, and also other lenses you may get. But if you plan only to use on the 18-200, then of course, it does save you bucks for the size of it...

Jeff you should have snagged mine off Xanga a while back!! I also vote for 77mm as resale will be easier and if you get a 70-200VR - it's a poor man's macro dream come true.

IIRC the 500D should be used at 85-300mm focal lengths. Shorter than 85mm will see better results with a 250D.

I don't think that the 500D would be of much use on a 12-24. Of course if you have other lenses with longer focal lengths that require a 77mm filter, then go for it.

The 500D doesn't do much on either the 12-24 or the 17-55. Works very well indeed on the 70-200 and Sigma 150 macro.

Now I get the advice

I thought a lot about this and have read a lot of postings on the Cafe on this topic. I agreed with a couple of posters and decided that I would just dedicate it to the 18-200 so went with the 72mm for simplicity.

The 72 mm is less weighty than the 77 mm version and in my opinion this ís important as the 18-200 is a not a well constructed lens. Actually I use an old pentax 67 mm 2 diopter wih step-up with good results.

The 500D came today and I only had a little time.
There are not many flowers out yet in Ohio but the phlox is starting to bloom.
Took 2 clicks and this was the best. Straight out of the camera.
