The 12-24 that Gaye sold me arrived -- thanks to her fast shipping -- just in time to take it to Utah last week. The following images of Mesa Arch, which is what drew me to the area in the first place, wouldn't have been possible without it.
The images were each taken with the D2x and the 12-24 at 12 to 14mm. In the first two images, 12mm is necessary to keep the arch in the image while getting the camera close enough to the arch to exclude some distracting foreground elements. (The arch is really very small.) Other photographers at the same location at the same time with lenses no wider than 17mm just couldn't get this effect.
The third image is also of the arch, but at 90 degrees to the left of the first two. It gives you some idea of the size of the arch, and how close the foreground rocks are to it. 12mm was also necessary here to include this much of the arch in the image and achieve the desired effect.
Because of the brightness of the sky, this third image also required combining two images, one at an EV of 1.7 less than the first. Utah has the pretties skies, and I didn't want to lose any of this one.
All images were taken just after sunrise, at 1/15 and f/16.
It's partly lost in these pale and slightly overexposed looking jpegs, so you'll have to trust me, but the underside of this arch has a brilliant orange/red glow.
