Cape Borda General Cargo Ship

  1. This photo is of the Cape Borda at the Mare Island dry dock. ( Former Navy base). She is having her hull scraped before she is towed to Texas where she will be scrapped. She was part of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet. At one time there were over 350 ships anchored there. Because of pollution to the bay from lead paint, asbestos, and leaking oil most of the ships have recently been removed. Some for scrap others to be retrofitted. Currently there are only 5 ships still anchored there. At one time the battle ship Iowa was there also an aircraft carrier and Howard Hugh's Glomar Explorer.
