I had the same essential experience with my wimberly gimble head. I had purchased it second hand, and it had seen better days. I sent the gimble back to wimberly, and for VERY little money, they rebuilt the entire unit. New base threads, new everything that moves. It still looks bad, but is now smooth as butter. Call them. They were a joy to work with.

Bought this one new about 6 months ago. With the clamp and dovetail things I have coming it shouldn’t happen again.
