Cheaper Glass on a D600?

Hi folks,

Looking for a little advice.

I currently have a D7000 and a set of Nikon Primes
(20mm f2.8D, 24mm f2.8D, 35mm f1.8G and a 50mm f1.8G)

I really enjoy using my D7000 as its size and IQ are excellent but I've been pondering the upgrade to a D600 partly so that I can fully exploit the width of full frame and have 20mm, 24mm, etc rather than the 1.5x crop factor.

I know I'd need to swap out the 35mm for one thats full frame compatible but other than that I'd want to use my 20/24/50.

My question is, are these lenses up to being used on Full Frame? I've seen them used on a D700 but I wondered if the extra resolution of the D600 would be too much for the older lenses to handle?

from the D700's 12MP to the D600's 24MP, there MIGHT be a slight difference in corners that youll be able to see when pixel peeping, but honestly you should be fine.

The 20mm f2.8 which I used on my D700 displayed some vignetting, especially with a Polariser, but this was easily cured in NX2.

Apart from that it is a beautiful lens for FX.

I replaced it with the 16-35mm f4 VR.

I can tell you that the 50 1.8G is fantastic on the D600.

My advice: enter the world of AI Nikkor glass. Manual focusing with the D600 will be a breeze.

In my opinion, all lenses benefit from being used on the most modern sensor you can use them with. This is even more apparent when you use the lenses on the format/sensor size they were initially designed for. While abberations are more visible at the pixel level, if you view images at the same size and distance from each sensor, the images from the newer sensor will trump or equal the old every time.

I think all the primes will be fine with your D600, but the 50mm 1.8 G will stand out. If you want higher IQ ( sharper, higher constrast, faster and have Nano coating) then I would sell 20/24/35 for 28mm 1.8G which is fantastic. I am having 28G and 50G with my D600 now.

Thanks guys, I've read the Thom Hogan article as well and he does suggest that the D primes (20/24/35) are actually pretty decent on the D600 (obviously the 24 and 35 f1.4 would be better!)

Very close to pulling the trigger on one from Amazon to at least see what I think of it.

Well we'll see, should have a D600 in my hands tonight, ordered from Amazon so if I don't like it for any reason it can go back but I'm looking forward to trying it!

I've never seen a single example where a lens is used on a camera such as a D700 with good results, but then the same lens is used on a D600 (or D800 for that matter), the photos compared at same size (printed on on screen) and the D600/D800 has a problem because the camera has more pixels. Still waiting.......

As someone who made the same jump I can tell you the 35mm works but does vignette, nicely but it's noticeable. You could change your 50mm for the old non g version which is a full frame lens. I personally prefer it over my 35mm and it's less than £100. Both produce beautiful images on the d600. The 55-200 also vignettes slightly but again the images are fantastic.
I bought a couple of cheap lenses to go with mine to get me started, the Nikon 28-80 I picked up for £25 and the images are great for an old kit lens, I also got 70-300 which is awful but was only £40 and I could re sell it anyway.
I've just bought the tamron 28-75 2.8 and I'm so far very impressed.

I use my MF 55 micro on my D600 all the time. It is nice!

Well I'm pleased to say that both my 20 2.8d and 24 2.8d lenses seem to work very well on the D600, 20mm will likely be kept as my "wide on FF.

I love the 24mm FOV so will likely keep that as a walkaround but need to replace my 35mm f1.8G and will add a 50mm lens also.

I can tell you that the 50 1.8G is fantastic on the D600.

Couldn't agree more :smile: Not sure what your budget and your needs are, but start with this lens, and then maybe add the 28/1.8G (not really 'cheap' though) and the 85/1.8G later on.

Agreed...This all started with the D800 coming out and the conversation stir regarding whether "lesser" lenses would look worse on "better" cameras. So now everyone has this underlying personal problem wondering if their lenses are worth it anymore. Let's stop this madness...your lenses are fine. If you feel the need to pixel peep to the degree that a corner isn't as sharp as it used to be, STOP TAKING PHOTOS IMMEDIATELY. You have obviously stopped enjoying photography as a hobby or have taken your professional level into carrying what a corner looks like when your subject is elsewhere. If you took your photo right, no one would be looking at the corner to begin with.

The D7000 has a higher pixel density than the D600, so anything that is sharp enough for the former will be sharp enough for the latter, barring some sort of extreme behavior in the corners of the FX frame.

Some of the few things that are cool on APC size cameras is that they use the sweet spot part of the lenses.

Passing from D90 to D600 meant to me to start to see lenses limits, as well as magic

Here there some test, including some Fujinons, Tokina and Nikons of course, most of them old good MF.

Having used/owned all of those (except the 20), personally, I would keep the 20 since you need something wide, sell the 24, get the 50 1.8G and if budget allows, the 85 1.8G. In the end, you'll have:

D600
20 2.8
50 1.8G
85 1.8G

That is a very solid kit. When you save up enough money, I would replace the 20 with the 28 1.8G or the 18-35 AF-S. Nothing wrong with old D lenses, but the new lenses with modern coatings are much better in terms of eliminating flare, rendering deep colors and overall sharpness.

As for the 35/2, I would rather have that lens than the 24 2.8D.
