The Collings Foundation, the folks who bring you Wings of Freedom are headquartered about 20 mins from my house.

This weekend they had a Race of the Century which looked pretty interesting. Basically, they were going to walk through time, racing horses and early cars and early airplanes like a 1909 Blériot Type XI against a 1914 Stutz Bearcat.

Some images here, lot more in my Flickr set. EXIF should be intact, C&C welcome. I shot w/ my D300 and for the races, for the most part, my Sigma 120-300, then dropped to my Nikon 70-200. Also used my 17-55, and for the indoor car shots used my 35/f2.

1. The Stearman was giving rides before the races. Maybe next time...

2. Some lucky folks got a ride in the stagecoach; it dates from the 1870's and is owned by The Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Mass.

3. The Belgian Draft horses were magnificent.

5. The horse & buggy was beaten handily by the Stanley Steamer (below).

6. The 1906 Stanley Steamer could move, it (not this one) still holds the land speed record for a steam-powered vehicle.

Nice series. I went Sunday, they didn't have the horse and buggy, and had a different Stanley Steamer. Photo ops were limited, they parked the Stearman just to the left of show center effectively blocking the view of the majority of the spectators. The Bleriot only made one run, there was a cross wind and that's no fun with a wing warping aeroplane.

Thanks...sorry to hear Sunday wasn't as good, despite being such a gorgeous day...I also noticed when I looked at my pics from last fall that quite a few planes were missing from the hangar, maybe they're out on the Wings of Freedom Tour...
