Very unusual, what is that? is it a covering over rock?

I like this a lot. Like Colin, I am curious what it is.

The mineral calcium carbonate has bubbled out of the ground to create this mound. Of course there is also the iron in the substrata that will bring out the orange like color.
Many of the pools that are in the area also have a orange color from bacterial mats. Here's a bigger look at the area...
