I am considering adding the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 VR lens to my batch of lenses. I have a D500 and D300. How compatible is it with them? I also have a TC 1.4x II

Are there any quirks or issues of that lens with a DX body?

All help is appreciated.

I used the 200-500mm lens with a D500 for many years. I have recently replaced it with a 500mm pf lens. I had a lot of fun using the 200-500mm lens with the D500 and got good results. I have never tried it with a teleconverter. One thing to be aware of, it does suffer from focus breathing. Other than being heavy it is a lovely sharp lens!

No issues whatsoever. When the D500 first came out Nikon specifically bundled the 200-500 with it and labeled it as a wildlife kit. I still have the box that the combo came in.

With the 1.4tc it loses a stop of light so wide open is f8. It's not as quick to focus and loses a tiny bit of sharpness. It will work but be prepared for those comprises.

What type of filter are you guys putting on the front of the lens? I was thinking the B&H UV Haze filter. It's $114 everywhere. Multi coated layers.

A beast of a lens to handhold while walking 2.5 miles. but it's more maneuverable than if on a monopod when handheld. Focused well, seems sharp to me.
