confusion about posting

Mongo is only a new member and wanted to post in "other animal" including some attached images. However, at the bottom of screen below "display options" the following appeared

"You may post new threads
You may post replies
You may not post attachments
You may edit your posts"

Has Mongo misunderstood this or is he able to post new threads with attachments ?? Could not find anything in the rules

Also, as Mongo moves around the site, he is asked a number of time to effectively, log in again. In the last hour or so, Mongo has had to log in several times. Is this normal or is Mongo doing something wrong ??

any help greatly appreciated.

The only way Mongo -- or any other cafe member -- can post pictures is by having them hosted "somewhere" on the net (flickr, photobucket, wordpress, etc) and add an image tag to his post.

Mongo can also check "the office" for stickies on how to do this exactly, written by people who can explain this much better than Lurker.

thank you all for your help. Unfortunately, if hosting is required, it seems Mongo will not be able to participate.

thanks again.

Hello -

Please tell Mongo that there are several photo-hosting sites out there on the inter-webs that provide either free trials for a limited period or free hosting in exchange for surrendering some personal and tracking data.

Examples include:

pbase.com

flickr.com

photobucket.com

and probably something associated with Google . . .

Mongo greatly appreciates your efforts Eric but Mongo is happy to only shares his work on the photo forum sites he belongs to. He does not believe in putting work out generally to host sites like Flickr or photobucket.

The other forum Mongo belongs to allows direct posting of images by "attachment" and thus Mongo has never had to consider host sites. In any event, he is aware of them and decided against them some time ago.

It is unfortunate that Mongo was not aware of the "no attachment" rule before becoming a member - but that is no one's fault but Mongo's.

But again, thank you for your sincere efforts to assist - much appreciated

regards

Has Mongo considered dropbox? While the images would still be "on the internet," others cannot browse Mongo's dropbox. The only way people can see Mongo's pictures is when Mongo tells them what the URL is, so Mongo controls what can be seen and what cannot.

thanks Lurker. Mongo had not considered this option. While Mongo does not like the idea of his work in cyberspace generally (except for some of the more secure features some photo forums offer), what you have suggested (subject to some more investigation by Mongo) may be an option.

Very kind of you to mention this.

big thanks

Not to be all first person about it, but when you attach your images to another website, they are as "in cyberspace generally" as anywhere. For example, here is a link to a picture I have posted on another website: http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=92430&d=1347776464

This works just like the pictures on my private site: http://101-365.com/hipstamatic/pages/IMG_0490.html

While both are "in cyberspace generally" neither is in an online gallery on a hosting service.

Mongo thanks you for the input and advice Chris. It still seems all too much to go through to post some images. Mongo does not wish to complicate things further. Nothing is simpler that uploading from Mongo's own image bank on his computer to the forum. However, he knows this is not possible on Nikoncafe. That may be where it ends.

Still looking into the dropbox idea at best but not yet convinced.

In terms of having work "out there", there is a very strong sense of security with the other forum Mongo also belongs to in dealing with it directly with images (without third party handling) and having an idea of the systems in place.

Mongo appreciates all the advice and effort extended by members to help but does not think it is feasible at this stage.

There is still benefit in looking at others' good work and participating in the tech talk and so on.

BTW - the image that greeted Mongo on your private site nearly scared the fur of him - LOL

regards from Mongo
