I love it when I get to see a species for the first time. Even better when they cooperate. I spotted this one while slowly making my way around a large pond. I could barely see his head peeking up over the bank. I took my time and let him get used to me and we ended up sharing the better part of an hour together - at some points being too close for the 500mm to focus. Good thing the 300 f/4 was on the D700 at my side. Light was a little harsh. But I managed.

Nice work, Aaron...!
Thanks, William.
Great shots Aaron!
Thanks a lot, Anthony.
Nice Aaron. I have yet to see one of these so I would be excited also.
Thanks, Jim. I was so close to missing him.
Nice shot. Love those eyes.
Thanks, Rich. Night herons do indeed have piercing eyes.
You did good despite the harsh light.
Thanks, Mike. The D7100 shots were easier to control than the D700 shots. The bird even let me play around with flash for awhile. The sun was low, but very direct. Not a cloud in the sky.
Those look great
Thanks, Randy.

Nice Aaron. I love it when the subject is cooperative...
Thanks, David. I do too. School will be out soon and I still plan to make it down your way at some point.
