CS #489 - Our Town

Hello all and welcome to CS #489, "Our Town".

Please post photographs of the town or city where you live. Preferably, show us scenes which distinguish your locale from all others, such as historic sites or unique features. If you don't live in or near a town or city, unique scenes from your local area are welcome.

Examples probably aren't needed, but here are a couple.

The Alexander Black House was built by the son of the early resident of Blacksburg for whom the town was named. It has recently been moved to a new site one block from its original location, refurbished, and repurposed as a museum for the town.

A much more modern structure is the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech, which opened in 2013.

Standard rules apply as always:

• Posted images must be shot from 12:01am Thursday thru midnight the following Wednesday.
• All members of the Nikon Café are welcome to participate.
• Be courteous & respectful of others when commenting on images.
• The CS is non-competitive and there are no "places" or "prizes." No fees, no special registration or statements from participants.
• Themes and posted images must be rated "E" for everyone -- no obscenity, pornography, violent content, etc.
• Participants must post their own images and respect the intellectual property of others.
• Post as often as you like. But please limit each post to three images.
• Please limit each image to a maximum of 1024 pixels on the longest dimension.

Actually, I've sent a query to Art about this and I'm waiting for a reply. In the meantime, you're free to continue posting at 800.

Inasmuch as the whole town of Pleasantville fits into one cellphone snapshot (that I've used in other CS editions), I'll have to get out and follow Mark Twain's advice. This week's expected weather should make that very enjoyable.

Really nice samples Jim. I love that old house. WOW! What colors. The modern art building is quite attractive too. I'm pretty easy to please architecturally.

I believe the 1024 is ok. But folks that use something less and are happy with it should just keep going with what they have. 1024 is the max.

Just a note on image size:
Café software allows up to 1024 pixels width, but downsizes to 689 for normal display. However, it does leave the option for clicking on the image to expand it to its full width. Note that 800 pixel wide images also are downsized in the normal display mode. If you have an image that "requires" viewing at full size, e.g., a panoramic view, you should use the URL to point to that image at its external host site.

Interesting theme Jim. I live in a very rural town that doesn't have too much to distinguish it from other places (other than things I've posted before). I'll have to check surrounding towns too.

Nice examples. I remember the Black house you've posted before. It sure is unique, and attractive.

Bob, I always wondered why the size was limited to 800 for CS - seems like 800 or 1024 would be handled the same visually.

It just happens that I see 689 on the laptop that I'm using. The 800 limit was set long ago under the old software when some of us were still working with dialup (slooow) Internet connections.

Now you tell me! After producing probably 1000+ photos acceptable for display at 800.... I even label my sub-directories under each shoot as "pbase JPEGs" which means that are (mostly) 800 pixels, suitable for display as "originals" in both pbase and the Café. That's what I get for being a 2007 member.

Harry, there is absolutely nothing wrong with posting photos at 800 pixels. Please continue as long as you like! I've been a member since 2005, but I've gradually increased the size of photos I post as most people's bandwidth has increased (except Bob Coutant's ). I upload to my web page at 2048 pixels now since that is what the latest iPads display in, I think.

A few years after high school I moved to Southern California for awhile and then moved back to the Kansas City area. Now I'm living back in St. Joe and all seems fine now.

St. Joseph's claim to fame is the Pony Express, which started in 1860, as this is where it started. So I thought I'd start by posting a couple related to the Pony Express.

We have a very large lake in the town, of which no one can swim in...

Because it is the water supply for the neighboring city of Manchester. Sailboating and fishing are allowed though.

Nice shots James. Read many stories about the Pony Express in my youth and watched a few movies too. Always presented as an exciting way of life. As I recall the real Pony Express was quickly replaced by Railroads and telegraph.
