So I got to test my D200 out in the field today, and I gotta say I'm pretty impressed. The image quality and handling of the camera are both top notch. I've noticed though that the D200 images can appear somewhat plastic looking, but I guess that's attributed to the CMOS sensor. Anyways, here are some samples I've taken. Overall I'm very happy with the camera and will probably buy another one!

You bet I used the 17-55! This lens mated to the D200 is like a dream! Tack sharp and color saturation is amazing. Seriously, with fast glass the AF performance on the D200 is very good, especially since I shoot mostly in low light. I'd say it's about 80% the D2H/X speed in AF, but it doesn't hunt like a D70. I think the D200 could be used for sports.

The viewfinder is also very good. I'm surprised they were able to make it so bright and clear, especially with a pop-up flash. I should be receiving my DK-21m viewfinder magnifier, so I'll update you guys when I get that installed.

My only gripe is the flimsy feeling battery grip and lack of a voice recorder. Besides those points, I think I'm going to buy me another D200!

Jonathan , Just a note the sensor is a CCD not a CMOS.

no, it involves the electronic shutter. D200 is all mechanical.
I believe the electronic shutter's drawback is it reduces the light gathering area of the pixel, though, and with a 6.2 micron pixel pitch, you want all the light gathering you can get.
They make up for it with Auto FP.

All technical issues aside; it's nice to hear someone is enjoying their D200. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on one. Probably be March before that happens, though.

Great pics, btw. First one looks fantastic!

Hi ISO NR

should be turned either off in the camera, or set to low if you don't want that plastiky look. Also, the in-cam sharpening should be set to High if you're shooting jpgs, like I think you are. Oh, ya, nice shots as always! Enjoy!

What were your settings - and what flash did you use?
Any post-production work in Photoshop, or are these raw, so to speak?

Doug, I shoot in raw, and have the in-cam set to Med High to check for in-focus shots. In NC, I turn that off & apply USM in the same amt as I do for the D2X, actually, a bit more than that even.

Since I shoot mostly nite photography, I usually stick to a setting of 1/160 f/6.3 @ 400 ISO. I shoot jpg, set my camera to high sharpening, enhanced saturation (for the D200 only, but for the D2H I use 'normal') and +3 on the hue. I set my flash to iTTL BL and let the flash handle my flash exposures for the night. I don't mess with exposure comp or flash comp either.

In photoshop I do a sharpening of about 100%, radius 1 and threshold 1, I then add a -2 Hue and a saturation of 10. I then do a mild level or curves adjustment, fairly straight forward.

Not true, the D2H is a love hate relationship with me. I hate the camera, but it has such sentimental value to me, that I'll never give the old girl up!

Jonathan, don't be afraid to pump up the ISO. These shots were taken at ISO1250:

Very nice color...esp the first two images.

What settings were you using? jpeg vs RAW?

Thanks.
