Please forgive me if this is already posted. If it has been, I missed it.

Amazon and Adorama now offer the D200 new for $999.95, probably a result of its having been discontinued according to the Japanese Nikon site.

$999 gets you a new camera with a full warranty, and possible an extended one is available still. $7-800 gets you a used one, and typical repairs run ±$200.

  5. Sort of like the D70s was $699.00 new at one point. Maybe it will be less than 3 years till the D300 is down to that price.

With the pace these new cameras roll out of the manufacturing line I'd bet the D300 will hit the sub $1000 mark next summer. The obvious time to announce the D400 is next March at PMA.

  7. Maybe even sooner!

I bought a Demo D200 last August from Cameta Camera for $1200, it came with a 1 year warranty and had something like 10 actuations. While that was clearly at the low end, Cameta was selling many D200 cameras then for $1300 or less; I doubt I could rent a D200 for even a week or two for the $200-$300 difference.
