Did not find this in a search, so posting in case others have the problem. Recently noticed my D300 when used with the 70-200 would frequently give a low battery error which resolves with turning the camera off and on again. Enough to be very frustrating. The rotational play in the mount is same as always. Changing battery didn't matter. No issues with other lenses. Found in another forum that people tried DeOxit on the lens contacts - available at Radio Shack for about $14. Others sent to Nikon for evaluation etc. Anyway, I tried DeOxit since I was on vacation. Sprayed it on a relatively clean sock in a car and wiped the contacts. Has worked fine since.

there was a known voltage problem with the D300 and older 70-200VR and contacts. I had this issue myself at first. Cleaning helped, but there was something else too.

I will try and dig up some old posts/threads.

Ah yes,

been so long with great work with the D300 I forgot all about this problem,

A combination of voltage problems, with contacts and the firmware. Fixed in the lastest firmware upgrades,

Search for Dead Battery Syndrome D300 and you will find tons of stuff,

many many more back 2-3 years ago........You should go for the most recent firmware update, it really does help with things on the camera. Easy to do, if you are up to date the cleaning should do it.

enjoy.
