Back on topic, I think the original poster should either waits for the D300/S replacement or gets a D300S. Hopefully a D400 gets announced soon.

I bought the D300s 8 months ago, and back then this same discussion was happening and some people said to wait. I am so happy I didnt wait. I have used my D300s so much and have loved it.
Why do you need a new camera to start shooting again?
Just go shoot with what you've already got. Maybe buy a lens or two instead?
Current prediction is that a D400 will be announced probably with a D4 in the fall, and then assuming there's no longer any manufacturing or power issues in Japan hopefully they'll have decent amount of product out there for launch and you won't need to wait until the following spring to get one.
Keep the D300, not much to update to the D300s...what did you replace? I have a D300 which really isnt far off from the D300. If I had a D90 I probably would have gone D300s by now.
If you want a supertele to play with cheaply and you have a D300, check out KEH.com for used Nikon manual focus glass. They commonly have beater 300/400/500/600mm lenses for pretty cheap. No 500's at the moment, but they have a couple of 600/4 ED AIS's for $3249, and a 400/3.5 ED AIS for $1479. Once in awhile some 500/4's pop up.I kinda have all the glass I need. and I'm not going to drop 8k and the 500 2.8 I want.
I love watching all the D7000 people get uptight and defensive.
Things happen when you use your gear, no matter how careful and if you can spend 200 more and get a body that can take 2 times the abuse then its worth it for me.
I have had 2 incidents where the better body has paid off already in less then a year
In fact Nikon has the most leeway in terms of time with FX.
I think even pros should think about treating their equipment with a little more care if they find they are needing the pro bodies in order that they take the abuse they dish out. Even the build quality of a D7000 should last anyone a decent amount of time if you're treating the equipment with the care it deserves. Everyone else is just unnecessarily careless with their equipment.
+1
ever see the way a newpaper shooter treats his stuff, it's sickening
i had a pro tell me once 'there tools not jewels' after he posted a pic on dp of his 4 big teles standing on their hoods on an ahsphalt road
to me they are both tools and jewels but then i treat all my stuff the same way
So was he. LOL!
