This note from the Nikon site is a bit confusing as it's unclear as to whether it refers to two different AF situations?

"Tripod mode is designed for shooting still subjects with a precision focus using contrast-detect AF in a stable tripod setup. Because the image sensor itself works for AF detection, you can focus anywhere within the frame. AF performance has been improved in various ways, including a higher AF speed than the D300, and enhanced AF accuracy, both in low-light scenes and with a dot light source. "

Does this paragraph refer only to Tripod Mode?

I think it's the same thing as the previous D300 w/ Tripod and Handheld mode. It just seems like they worded it strangely.

Off of the D300s info page:

In Handheld mode, which allows you to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting, TTL phase-detection AF using 51 AF points is activated. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects. It allows contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame.

Note they have added autofocus to the movie mode on the new D300s, and they talk about faster autofocus in general (a common knock...true...about the D300 is that it is slow to lock focus compared to the D3/D700 cameras). So my guess is all focus modes have been improved. And the improvement can't just apply to tripod mode, as that is pretty useless for movies.

Those are worded in an ambiguous way... looks like Nikon is talking about LiveView focusing.
