Almost gone. Thom is reporting that Nikon USA has moved the D300s from the list of active camera to archived. Means that if you really want a new one, you had better find one at a dealer before they're gone.
Speculate away if there is a replacement pending.......

Even with all the shortcomings of the D800 (low fps mainly), it's pretty much consolidated my D700 and D300 into one camera. Though for those who need a high speed DX body in a quality chassis, you can't beat the D300!

I just shot 4 LAX games this morning with a used d300 I picked up for 450 with a grip and extra battery and the new 120-300.....sad to say the d7100 just can't keep up

You're preaching to the choir Randy! The D300 is a great deal used and for daytime crop shooting it's still a beast! BTW - I'm going to get that 120-300 Sport eventually! I love everything about that lens!

I have been shooting the 300vr for 8 years and I had the 1st 2 120-300s and the new one is way different in the AF dept
In fact AF and IQ put it on par with my 300vr1
I only keep the 300vr1 because it makes a super HHable 500 with the 1.7

If not a D400 (D9300) then at least a D7200 with an extra button and huger (that's huge x huge) buffer.
please

NR posted a reminder for us that the D300s was actually discontinued back in 2012. Which goes to the point Hogan made. It's likely that they just finally sold off the remaining inventory so now will remove it from the list. Similarly they still list the D3x as a current model and are trying to sell off inventory. Which brings up a thought. If they haven't produced either body for a couple of years and are trying to sell of inventory, why not drop the prices? Maybe because they recognize that those were really good bodies and still warrant the price? Duh... then why not make something like that again!!!?

I don't know, ever since the D7100 came out the D300s became redundant in many eyes.
Also, why would someone buy old tech D300s for $1,300 when you had lots of choices for "like new" used ones for around $500.

Supply/demand is pretty straightforward. They must be selling them at that price, albeit slowly. Some people simply won't buy used nor third party equipment at any price. Many examples of such comments right here in the forums.

Bottom line is that this isn't new so not likely related to them getting ready to release a new DX body.

Somewhat agree, but knowing several folks in the retail end of independent camera shops, the word has been that Nikon has probably moved the remaining stock to "other" parts of the world, as NA sales ceased.
And yes, the D300 successor has always been tied to Canon's 7D, so the sooner it comes out, ours is not far behind. Me thinks 30 days +/-

But it didn't become redundant in many others' eyes.
Buy a D300s for it's ergonomics, its extra buttons, its focussing ability.

It's not redundant because there is nothing better at what it does but you'd be nuts to buy a new one
