D70, Adding a cable release

So i think im going to add a remote shutter release on my D70. Ive been using it for timelapse and have hacked an ML-L3 into my rig to trigger it, but ive encountered times where it does not fire.

So i think im going to add a remote shutter port onto this camera.

I have the D70 service manual, it explains how to take it apart and all that jazz, seems straight forward enough to get to the IR detector. It has a 3 pin output i can tap into, i assume this is similar to the 3 pins used normally for a camera shutter release.

Anyhow, i figured i would check and see if anyone else has done this before i go all willy nilly on this thing. Has anyone done this? or seen it done?

Also the repair manual does not include the part needed for the shutter cable port, which makes sence because it does not exist on the D70. Does anybody know the name of this port? is this something specific to nikon?

I seen a site where they did this. They just ran 3 wires from the release to a 1/8" or 3/32" stereo jack plug mounted under the cover for the video out plug area. They used a canon remote that had the stereo style plug on it.

Was going to do this with my old D70 but never got around to. Maybe pick a second one up to do an IR and may as well do this while its apart.
