D70 files unreadable .jpg "file folder" please help

I have a buddy who i work with that attended a wedding this past weekend and shot 400+ pics with his D70. when he got home and tried to open the files, the first 350 were unreadable. they have the standard filename, DSC_xxx.jpg, but after that it says something about a "file folder" and he says when he tries to open them his computer says that it's an unrecognizable file. Not all the pictures from that weekend were like this, just the first 350 or so. anyone seen anything like this before? he said it's the first time it's happened, and he's pretty beat up about not being able to get the pictures of the wedding. any way or programs to recover these?

any help would be appreciated.

sorry about not much info... any questions that might help i can relay to him and answer on here.

You might be able to use a program like OnTrack EasyRecovery. Many of these types of programs have the ability to "blindly" read data (ignoring misplaced EoF markers etc) from a disk and reconstruct it. However if the media is physically damaged their success rate is much lower.
