A few months ago, I picked up a $45 rough condition fast lens with glass in good shape. I don't think I've ever seen another one, it's a Quantaray 28mm f/1.8; I posted some more info and pics of it here: https://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=236648

Well, I was curious about how it would do on the D700, here's the 3rd shot taken with the camera - ISO220, 1/30th, f/1.8

I'm pretty happy with that :D  and indoors, this $45 QR lens and my ~$100 50mm 1.8 are going to be a pretty tough 'budget' 1-2 lens punch for me.

A couple more... this one was handheld over / behind my shoulder, ISO6400, f/1.8, 1/30th, of course no VR and no noise reduction, it was dark night outside, no exposure compensation or edits:

in shot #2 how are you going 34MPH and 0RPM and check engine? did you blow the motor while driving to take this shot?

looks odd to me... but nice lens tho for $45!

LOL.....maybe an inop tach is causing the C/E light to come on.

I am going to NY tomorrow and toying with the idea of bringing my 28-80g $40 lens. I was going to do just the Sigma 50mm 1.4, as I wanted to do just one walk around lens, but the lure of the cheap plastic is calling me.

  4. Maybe he's coasting to the light with the engine off to save on that monster gas bill?

    Ha! lol good questions :)

The SES light has been on ever since the cat has been off. :sneaky:

And the tach and temp leads were broken at some point. I don't worry about the gas too much (reference some of my vids for proof http://www.youtube.com/yukonsneaky), although my Z06 does get better mpg than the Yukon

Speaking of blown motors, check out this article I wrote about the latest saga in with my Z06:

  9. Great find. I might have to try some cheaper stuff.

  10. Another example of Quantaray low cost excellence on a D700:

    Uncle Pug that is AWESOME!!!!!

Here's a few more from a birthday dinner last night, shot in a VERY DARK restaurant at f/1.8, ISO6400, no flash, handheld, etc.

DOF was a little too shallow on some of them, but I was happy with how they turned out for non-flash casual pics.

  14. Amazing low light stuff!

Those are inspiring John! I think I need to get the Quantaray out of the drawer and onto the camera... it might just be the kick I need to get rolling.

I definitely would like to have 1.8 but sadly :sniff: my 24 is a lowly 2.8

6400 is just gorgeous in all of these shots.

John, I see you have a V1 in your truck... I have a couple for my cars

  16. This is what I love about the D3/D700 sensor. It can pretty much make any piece of glass look good!

    Thanks ya'll!

And yep, AOME - the V1 has been a partner of mine for probably 15+ years now. I have extra mounts in the Z06 and SUV's and just put it in whatever car I'm driving. It's not a 100% failsafe but definitely wouldn't want to be without it....

Mine is AF, not sure about Uncle Pug"s.

  20. I like the V1 as well :) . I'd hate to travel without one!

Absolutely fantastic value on that $45 lens. I'm amazed!
